Giving the gift of mobility and Christmas joy

At Bikes for Tykes in Abilene, Texas, we collect, restore, and rebuild used bicycles and wheelchairs. Together with church partners and generous volunteers, we present refurbished rides to the Salvation Army for local children and adults in need every Christmas.

How we serve Abilene

From picking up unused cycles to handing over fully restored bikes and mobility devices at Christmas, discover how our community mission operates year-round.

Bicycle refurbishing

We take donated, pre-owned kids' and adults' bikes and meticulously clean, repair, and test every part to ensure safety, durability, and holiday smiles.

Wheelchair restoration

Mobility transforms lives. Our team repairs and sanitizes donated manual and transport wheelchairs for adults and seniors in need across the Abilene area.

Volunteer community

You do not need to be a professional mechanic to help. We welcome church groups, families, and individuals of all skill levels to fix, clean, and prep bikes.

Salvation Army partnership

Every completed bike and wheelchair is placed into the care of the Salvation Army for organized distribution during their annual Christmas toy drives.

"Seeing the excitement in the children's eyes when they receive a shiny, rebuilt bicycle on Christmas morning is the greatest blessing for our whole community."

Common questions

Learn more about our non-profit operation, how we source bicycles and wheelchairs, and how you can take part in this Christmas ministry.

What condition must donated bicycles be in?

We accept bikes in almost any condition! If a bike cannot be safely restored, we harvest its usable parts, tires, and chains to rebuild other bicycles.

Do you accept adult wheelchairs as well as bikes?

Yes. We actively collect manual wheelchairs, transport chairs, and youth mobility devices to restore them for local adults and seniors who need them.

Do I need bike mechanic experience to volunteer?

Not at all. We have roles for everyone, including cleaning, sorting parts, inflating tires, polishing frames, and test riding.

How are the bikes distributed at Christmas?

All refurbished bikes and wheelchairs are given directly to the Salvation Army in Abilene, who coordinates distribution with families in need.

Can church or civic groups organize a donation drive?

Yes, we love partnering with local churches, youth clubs, and businesses to host neighborhood collection drives across Abilene.

Are monetary donations accepted for replacement parts?

Yes, funds help us buy new inner tubes, brake pads, chains, pedals, and safety helmets for children receiving bicycles.
